Working Patterns for Maximum Efficiency

In the modern business world we are often admonished to “work smarter, not harder”, yet this can sometimes be a little difficult to put into practice. This course provides practical skills and perspectives to do just that by encouraging delegates to fundamentally re-examine their working patterns.

Working Patterns for Maximum Efficiency (2 Days)

Overview

The increasing use of technology has led the modern corporate world to evolve in ways that mirror the capabilities of our IT and communications systems; for example, the financial markets now “follow the sun” with one global market opening as another one closes and this creates an almost ceaseless demand on our energy, time and attention. Whilst computers may be able to cope with running at peak load for lengthy periods of time, human beings cannot and attempting to do so causes our health, happiness, productivity and ultimately profitability to be compromised. This course examines the overwhelming scientific evidence that human beings are rhythmic creatures and that optimal efficiency, in almost all respects, is best achieved by attuning to and synchronizing our activities with these biological rhythms.

Objectives

Delegates who attend this two-day training can expect to:

  • Experience an opportunity to review and revise their attitude towards working patterns,
  • Understand what scientific research has discovered about the rhythmic nature of human activity and behaviour,
  • Appreciate what the research has indicated are the negative consequences, personally and professionally, of disregarding these natural rhythms,
  • Discover and attune to the subtle cues that indicate the presence of these rhythms,
  • Be introduced to auditing and assessing their own patterns of working (and those of the groups and teams they interact with), allowing them to devise and implement appropriate and ecological changes to optimize performance.

Target audience

This course is desirable for any person interested in optimizing their own performance or the performance of those they manage. Managers, supervisors, team leaders, coaches, mentors, teachers, HR professionals and self-employed workers may all benefit profoundly. Those responsible for creating or evolving corporate cultures and attitudes may be particularly interested. As the principles that we will cover relate to many different types of performance and skill acquisition – physical and mental – sportspeople and their professional advisors may also benefit hugely from attending this course.

The Ultradian Rhythms Cycle

Ultradian rhythms are frequent cycles which repeat during a twenty-four hour day. Ultradian rhythms are body cycles such as heart rate, bowel and urination activities, appetite, nostril dialation, thermoregulation and hormonal release. If you are not sleep deprived, it is thought that your ultradian rhythms will allow you to experience 90 - 120 minutes more focused attention which will then be accompanied by 20 minutes of lesser focus, and this can often result in lack of concentration. This is a person's brain telling them to relax and take a break. Here at Watts Works we will analyse a person's ultradian rhythms and can increase employee productivity by implementing a productivity improvement plan that fits with their cycle.

The Basic Rest and Activity Cycle (BRAC)

BRAC occurs when a person attempts to defeat their ultradian rhythms, and BRAC ultimately results in an employee feeling tense and stressed. BRAC can make a person feel more emotional than usual and this is a way of a person's body telling them they need urgent rest. Stress in the workplace can often lead to breakdowns or unusual behavioural patterns. If you do not adhere to your BRAC rhythms this can result in illness, and is your body's way of forcing you to rest. Here at Watts Works we are professionals in employee performance management, so we take BRAC into consideration when trying to increase employee productivity.

More about courses
“In the typical 8 hour workday most people can expect to experience 4 or 5 peak periods when they are at their best in making decisions, planning and doing whatever they have to do. It therefore makes no sense for employers to try to get people to be busy every minute of the work day. The idea is to work smarter, not harder.”
